Accelerated Dental Program (D.D.S)

Description

The Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry offers an opportunity to earn the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) to qualified graduates of international dental schools while under a part-time faculty contract within the School of Dentistry.

The purpose of this program is to provide dentists educated in international dental schools an opportunity to earn a DDS degree from an accredited U.S. dental school in order to help meet the educational requirements for eligibility for licensure in all states. It is also helpful to those planning an academic career in dental education and research as it provides valuable teaching experience.

The Accelerated Dental Program (ADP) is individualized to meet the educational needs of the student. It consists of didactic and clinical components distributed over a two program. The program begins in the Fall of the Academic Year (August) and ends in August of the second year. The administration is able to consider offering a one or two year extension of the program at their discretion.  Tuition rates depend on the length of the program.

The program consists of a minimum of two years, all of which must be completed at the 海角大神 (transfer students will not be considered). The program may extend beyond the two-year period to meet an individual's educational needs. This option is at the discretion of the administration of the dental school.

*Acceptance into the accelerated dental program also depends on the educational and faculty personnel needs of the School of Dentistry, which may vary each year.

Please note: You must have an ADA accredited post-graduate dental specialty degree or certificate from at least a two-year United States or Canadian program in clinical dentistry to be eligible to apply to the Accelerated Dental Program.

  • Accelerated Dental Program Admission

    You must have an ADA accredited post-graduate dental specialty degree or certificate from at least a two-year United States or Canadian program in clinical dentistry to be eligible to apply to the Accelerated Dental Program.

    Dr. Palanci will review the applicant’s qualifications and consult with division chairs to determine if the applicant’s qualifications meet departmental needs. If so, a formal application will be sent for admission.

    2. Each applicant is required to submit a complete formal application for admission. No application will be reviewed until it is complete. The complete application consists of the following:

    • Application form
    • Current Curriculum Vitae
    • Passport type photograph (2" x 2")
    • $75 application fee (U.S. funds, made payable to Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry)
      Note: Money order or certified check only.
    • Official Evaluation of Foreign Educational Credentials Course-by-Course Evaluation Report. This report must be prepared by the Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc.

      Note: Payment for this service is made directly to Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. Please read and follow application instructions carefully.
    • An official copy of National Board Dental Examination Scores, Part I. Successful completion of this examination is required and a maximum of two attempts to pass this examination will be allowed. This must be an original document and mailed from the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations.
    • Evidence of U.S. Immigration and Naturalization status. The applicant must either be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident alien (Green Card), show proof that permanent residency status is in process, or meet eligibility for requirements for a F1 student visa.
    • Demonstrated competence in the English language. Non-native English speakers are required to complete one of the following options:
      • The Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL - IBT) with a minimum score of 25 on each section AND a minimum total score of 100 is required.
      • The Detroit Test of English Language Proficiency with a combined score of 80 and passing grade in Composition and Speaking.

        Note: The Office of Academic Administration reserves the right to request the applicant be tested by the Department of American Language and Culture, 海角大神, regardless of TOEFL-IBT results
    • One letter of recommendation from the Dean or Academic Dean of the candidate's overseas dental program
    • Program Director of the post-doctoral program.
    • Two letters of professional reference from faculty of the candidate's accredited U.S. graduate dental specialty degree program
    • An official transcript, posting the earned certificate or degree from an accredited U.S. graduate dental specialty degree program

    Individuals who do not meet the above stated criteria will not be considered for an interview.

    Completed applications will be reviewed by February 1 and Candidate Interviews will be offered starting March 1.

    Adjunct Faculty Position

    PLEASE NOTE: Acceptance into the accelerated dental program is based on the educational and faculty personnel needs of the School of Dentistry. Applications received by the Office of Academic Administration will be reviewed based on potential part-time faculty positions available for the next academic year.

    If a position is available, completed applications will be forwarded to specific educational divisions for review. The division chair is responsible for the review and selection of potential candidates. The interview process for potential candidates is coordinated by the specific division chairperson and the director of the Accelerated Dental Program.

    If a department is interested in recruiting and hiring an Accelerated Dental Candidate, that recommendation will be forwarded to the Academic Dean. The Dean will make the final determination if a candidate is eligible for the Accelerated Dental Program.

    Description

    • Position includes 20 hours per week (50% FTE) of student contact while teaching during the student preclinic lab, clinic, or classroom sessions in the 2-year program.
    • Teaching commitment in the 3rd and 4th year track will increase up to 80% FTE after the first semester.  During this first this student will proceed academically with the students in the two year cohort..
    • Faculty are required to teach for 6 complete terms for a two-year program; 9 complete terms for a three-year program and 12 terms for a four-year program.
    • Teaching and clinical assignments are determined by the department chairperson. Faculty are expected to participate in all faculty-related activities, including faculty meetings, faculty development programs, graduation, school-sponsored social gatherings, etc.
    • Annual salary is $32,000.00.
    • Benefits include TIAA-CREF and health insurance.

    DBS 6030- Integrated Biomedical Sciences

    This course is 32 clock hours and contains didactic principles of Biomedical Sciences, Oral Diagnosis, Treatment Planning, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

    DENT 6000-Comprehensive Patient Care I

    This course is 330 clock hours. It includes all of the clinical patient care activities and experiences of the program.

    DENT 6010-Advanced Concepts in Clinic Dentistry Seminar I

    This course is 32 clock hours Seminar, 16 clock hours Simulation Clinic, includes topics from Pharmacology, Physical Assessment, Occlusion.

    DENT 6020-Independent Research –

    This course is 64 clock hours and contains Research as determined with Department Chairperson.

    DOD 6010-Orthodontics

    This course requires the student to research and give a 1 hour PowerPoint (PPT) presentation on a mutually agreed upon topic related to orthodontics and the primary field of expertise of the accelerated DDS student. Guidelines will be provided, but the PPT must be supported by appropriate references and completed within the Fall Term of the first year of study.  In the Winter Term  this PPT  must be presented to members of the Orthodontic Department. They must also take and pass a Malocclusion Competency.

    DOM 6010-Radiology Clinic

    DOM 6010 Radiology prepares the accelerated dental student to practice the science of oral and maxillofacial radiology at the same level of a graduating senior dental student.  Since this program (Accelerated DDS) is intended for advanced level dental students, this course assumes the admitted student has fundamental knowledge of the basic concepts in oral and maxillofacial radiology.

    DPD 6010-Pediatric Lectures and Behavior Management

    This course consists of a series lectures followed by the reading of journal articles, professional standards, and other materials relative to behavior management of pediatric dental patients.  The student is expected to present well-written papers based on the current literature related to the assigned topics.  Topics include child development, behavior management and modification techniques, sedation and monitoring of pediatric dental patients, local anesthesia, and child abuse and neglect.

    DPD 6210-Pediatric Dentistry Clinic

    This course is intended to provide additional clinical experiences in pediatric dental techniques, evaluate the clinical competency of each student in pediatric restorative dentistry and  treatment planning, and provide comprehensive care to pediatric dental patients at the Corktown Clinic or University Health Center.

    DPE 6050-Principles of Surgical Dentistry

    This course is 48 clock hours and contains didactic and Preclinical Principles of Periodontics, Endodontics and Oral Surgery.

    DRD 6040-Principles of Restorative Dentistry

    This course is 64 clock hours and contains didactic and Preclinical Principles of Operative, Fixed Prosthodontics, Removable Prosthodontics, Occlusion and Materials.

    DSD 6010-Patient Management

    This course provides the accelerated DDS candidate with opportunities to apply patient management skills in clinical situations.  As students treat their clinical patients they will have the opportunity to practice and demonstrate skills related to the management of patient care, such as professionalism and ethics, informed consent, infection control, record keeping, practice management and communication skills.  Student competence in these areas will be evaluated.  (Patient Communication, Ethics, Jurisprudence, Practice Management, Quality Improvement)
