Request Accommodations

Members of the Office of Equal Opportunity’s Student Accessibility Services work collaboratively with students to determine appropriate accommodations.

The process for requesting accommodations has three parts:

  1. Submit initial information on the online
  2. Provide supporting documentation, most commonly from their healthcare provider
  3. Meet with a member of the office for an interactive discussion

Providing Documentation

The process works best when we have an opportunity to review your supporting documentation before meeting with you. The most helpful documentation:

  • Has been completed by a licensed provider
  • Includes a diagnosis of the student’s condition(s)
  • Describes the functional limitations the student faces in academic environments

If you do not have current documentation that includes all these elements, please have your provider complete the Disability Verification Form.

Supporting Documentation

IEPs, 504 Plans, records of accommodations at prior institutions, and other documentation that establishes a history of accommodations or supports a record of barriers or other functional limitations can be helpful in determining appropriate accommodations at Detroit Mercy. While these documents are not required, our team will evaluate and consider any supporting information you provide.

Meeting with Student Accessibility Services

Once we receive your initial information and supporting documentation, we will reach out to you by email to schedule a meeting to discuss your disability and its impact on your education and daily life and to determine the most appropriate supports. These meetings help us become familiar with your needs and to answer any questions you have.

Official Notice of Accommodations

After we meet with you, discuss your needs, and evaluate the information you provide, we will determine the most appropriate accommodations for you. You will be notified by email of the accommodations that have been approved.

If you wish to appeal your accommodation decision, please contact Executive Director of Equal Opportunity, Megan Novell, at novellme@udmercy.edu.
